When delivering/assessing ASQA requirements are followed. Assessment events are mapped to the Units of Competence. Students knowledge and skill is assessed against critical aspects, described by the Unit of Competence. Employability skills are measured against the level of content, ie Level 2 should be able to follow instructions and perform simple tasks through to Level 5 able to lead and manage staff.
Current Practice
Tasks/assessments are designed around workplace situations, sample organisations have been developed. Learners are placed in a real life situation, having to make decisions, choose the correct tools for the task, etc.
Learners gain the necessary knowledge but also develop skills in problem solving, effective communication, using technology, working in teams, enterprise knowledge and organisational skills at the required level.
The learner not only becomes knowledgable in content and developing the required employability skills, they transform into self directed learners, self motivated and wanting to learn more using resources available to them. The end result is learners who acquire life long learning skills.
It is not possible to reflect back on past practices, as my practice as an educator has always been to ensure employability skills are incorporated in delivery and assessment.
Hi Suzy,
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by the embeddedness of your employability skills in your learning outcomes. There was a move across universities to do the same.. so that learning outcomes identified the key graduate attributes and the way that they were embedded. As far as I have heard, this move has gone a little quiet. I wonder if there are perceived difficulties with this, and whether there is a less on to be learned from the VET area. I would love to learn more!
I can relate to what you are saying Suzy as a vet teacher myself, I reckon that is the reason why I am passionate about what I do because we facilitate learning based on employability skills and that requires real life simulation and scenarios in the delivery process, this goes beyond content as students apply and modify transferred information through sharing ideas and building up on that as a result they get into the employment world as seasoned problem solvers
